The joy of a Joseph Wambaugh story is the detailed and varied characters that come together in unexpected ways and provide a slice of life that lends some sense of clarity to the reader that often lasts for years after reading one of his books. There is no such enlightenment or revelation here. On a strictly mechanical review, the failure to settle into either a first person recital of events or a third person narration, leaves an uncomfortable perspective swing. With reasonably good character development, a fair amount of world building, a reasonable facsimile of romance ( the voice of female passion, is a bit contrived, the passages on a young girls sexual abuse are less to an compelling and not particularly well done. These subjects if done poorly do more harm to the narrative than if they are omitted altogether.) combined with passable dialogues makes this book worth reading. Too much of that dialogue is chock full of t-shirt and bumper sticker slogans, very common sayings that are treated as great whiticisms by the other characters. While I enjoyed reading this book enough, I would not likely recommend it to anyone I know. It would be quite easy to persuade me to down grade it to a two star rating, and virtually impossible to persuade me to upgrade to a four star rating. It did very much make me want to re-read "The Choir Boy's" and "The Black Marble." both of which are solid four to five star books imho.As an aside to the author should be deign to read my opinion, is there anything more useless to a book than a table of contents that merely lists the chapters by number?

I loved this book and the sequel. It kept me interested throughout and was well written. I would highly recommend this book!
Great reading, characters are intriguing, I would like to read more by this author.
This book is good,except for grammatical errors. There were quite a few.The story was very good and I would have given it a five,if not for the errors of misplaced words and grammer.
